This game provided perhaps the starkest contrast between the Flames money players and their support guys this year. Iginla and Jokinen were still paired at this point and still mostly seeing the tough match-ups. As you can see, they got absolutely obliterated by Cammalleri's line.

Conversely, The Conroy (Boyd, Glencross) line managed the biggest single game of ES chance generation yet. They each ended the game -1, but deserved better. The 4th line, of course, was also full value, beating the crap out of Laraques unit and scoring 3 goals in the process. It's too bad those two units have been subsequently broken up.

Here's Olivier's count. We differ quite widely when it comes to the Flames scoring chances, with him counting 23 for Calgary and me down at 17. The Flames had a number of shots from fuzzy areas (just outside the face-off dot, or just beyond the top of the face-off circle) which may or may not be considered a scoring opportunity depending on who you talk to. I tend to be pretty tough on those chances, but Olivier may not be.

Pretty quiet game overall for both teams. The Flames had probably their worst period of the season in terms of generating chances in the first period: they managed all of 3 chances, 2 of which were their goals (which wouldn't have been scored as chances if they hadn't gone in). The other one came 15 seconds into the game.

That said, the second period was the first time this year the Flames held the opponents to zero scoring chances. A couple of PP's and the Avs sitting back led to the wide differential.

In the end, though, the Flames only outchanced the Avs 11-8 at ES, despite outshooting them by a wide margin. A lot of the shots were from the perimeter and it looked like the club played with sticks smeared with bacon fat - the chances count for Calgary would have doubled had they been able to bear down on the puck in the crease. A lot of fanning, passing pucks into skates and shooting pucks into blocks in the slot by Calgary this evening for whatever reason.

On Colorado's side, you have to give them credit for playing a quiet, steady, low event game. They spent a lot of time in their own end, but never made any significant mistakes and collapsed around their goaltender expertly, often smothering open skaters and rebounds as soon as they appeared. Also, Their 3 chances in the 3rd came during a single, sublime shift by the Wolksi line that culminated in the winning goal.

There was some talk about Jokinen and Iginla improving after this game, but I didn't really see it. Langkow et al were fed to the wolves while Iginla and Jokinen facced the likes of Durno, Svatos, Jones and Koci. Jokinen was scored on twice in the first, despite the easy match-up, due to extended shifts in the defensive zone. The pair of them managed to up the chance count at the end of the game when they were pressing for the tying goal and the Avs were sitting 5 in the neutral zone, but there was still a lot of lost puck battles at the sideboards and passes to no one in particular by the pair of them. Given the level of competition - depth players and rookies - I came away fairly unimpressed.

The second period was probably the most dominant of the season thus far for the Flames. They generated a ton and gave up almost nothing.

Also, Olli Jokinen was on the ice for 3 ES scoring chances for in this game, but he had next to nothing to do with any of them - he just happened to be the guy skating around when his linemates were doing something. His only true contributions to creating opportunities came on the PP.

Dennis' count here. Looks like he gave each team one more chance than I did, but it looks like we're in the same ballpark.

I'm currently re-watching some of the first few games of the year with the purpose of counting the scoring chances. This is the first of 4 games that will appear hear over the next week (games 2 through 5) not including any regularly scheduled games, of course.

I'd have to say this was probably the Flames luckiest win of the year thus far. They were grossly outshot and outchanced and I wouldn't have classified 3 of their 4 goals as chances if they hadn't gone in. In fact, I excluded the final Moss tally outright since it was little more than a giant error by Khabibulin that led to the goal. I think the win could have very easily been a 5-1 loss if not for some favorable bounces and Patrick O'Sullivan missing repeatedly missing the net on glorious scoring chances.

The only Flames well in the black this evening? Dustin Boyd (+4) and Craig Conroy (+4). Boyd also led the team in terms of chance (5), all of which came at ES. Given some of his other notable efforts, that seems like a trend to me, so it'll be interesting to see what Boyd's totals and differentials are through the first 10 games are.

Here's how Dennis scored the game from an Oilers perspective. He was little kinder to the Flames than I was, apparently, finishing with a 19-16 figure favor of Edmonton.
