Pretty quiet game overall for both teams. The Flames had probably their worst period of the season in terms of generating chances in the first period: they managed all of 3 chances, 2 of which were their goals (which wouldn't have been scored as chances if they hadn't gone in). The other one came 15 seconds into the game.

That said, the second period was the first time this year the Flames held the opponents to zero scoring chances. A couple of PP's and the Avs sitting back led to the wide differential.

In the end, though, the Flames only outchanced the Avs 11-8 at ES, despite outshooting them by a wide margin. A lot of the shots were from the perimeter and it looked like the club played with sticks smeared with bacon fat - the chances count for Calgary would have doubled had they been able to bear down on the puck in the crease. A lot of fanning, passing pucks into skates and shooting pucks into blocks in the slot by Calgary this evening for whatever reason.

On Colorado's side, you have to give them credit for playing a quiet, steady, low event game. They spent a lot of time in their own end, but never made any significant mistakes and collapsed around their goaltender expertly, often smothering open skaters and rebounds as soon as they appeared. Also, Their 3 chances in the 3rd came during a single, sublime shift by the Wolksi line that culminated in the winning goal.

There was some talk about Jokinen and Iginla improving after this game, but I didn't really see it. Langkow et al were fed to the wolves while Iginla and Jokinen facced the likes of Durno, Svatos, Jones and Koci. Jokinen was scored on twice in the first, despite the easy match-up, due to extended shifts in the defensive zone. The pair of them managed to up the chance count at the end of the game when they were pressing for the tying goal and the Avs were sitting 5 in the neutral zone, but there was still a lot of lost puck battles at the sideboards and passes to no one in particular by the pair of them. Given the level of competition - depth players and rookies - I came away fairly unimpressed.
