This was the final recorded game I had to count, so expect me to be up-to-date from now on.

This was an interesting contest because it featured a trio Brent Sutter has apparently re-united in practice prior to the upcoming road trip: Iginla-Jokinen-Nystrom. As you can see, they pretty much got killed. On home ice, to boot. They faced the Richards line a bunch which, for my money, was the second unit for Dallas in the game behind Ribeiro's trio (they saw Langkow's unit). Nystrom wasn't always the "other winger", but we all know that it pretty much doesn't matter who "the other guy" is when Jokinen and Iginla get together - the line is going to suck.

They actually didn't look overly terrible until the third period when the Flames were trailing. Now, most folks in this corner of the web know about the "lead effect" where shots and chances by the leading team fall relative to the trailing team. Part of that is due to strategy and part of that is due to psychological effects. The other part is due to desperation: when trailing in the third, a coach will usually shorten his bench, double-shift difference makers and get more aggressive about favorable match-ups. That happened in this game, with Iginla and Jokinen seeing a lot of ice after the team went down by 2. The problem was, the pair of them didn't improve the Flames attack - they killed it. Jamie Benn was nabbed for a tripping penalty in the last five minutes and the PP was a disaster. Jarome gave the puck during two separate sequences and then caused an off-side for good measure. Shortly thereafter, Jokinen carried the puck into the corner and promptly passed it to an opposing player. The club didn't generate a single scoring chance as a result. In the final minute of the game, with the goalie pulled no less, Jokinen did something similar...except this time it was in the neutral zone. Dallas shot the puck in, recovered it and then scored on the empty net. It was a train-wreck of a period for the duo and almost a perfect microcosm of the way the pair have mostly played to start the season.
